Our student spotlight this week is Anand Balar, a sophomore in Computer Information Technology from Valparaiso, Indiana. He aspires to obtain a law degree after he completes his undergraduate studies so that he may be a policy adviser on information security policy. Regarding future aspirations, he also shared that he wishes to own a husky as his first dog.

Anand says he chose to attend Purdue because,

[Purdue] was one of the best options for my degree. Being invited to the Honors College sold it for me because it would be something that would provide a different experience from most other schools, and it would make me stand out to likely employers and grad schools.

On and around campus, Anand is heavily involved. In fact, he co-founded the Collegiate DECA club here at Purdue and now serves as the club's President. DECA is a business-oriented club which high school and college students participate in around the globe. Anand is also a member of the Purdue Student Government Committee of Diversity and Inclusion as well as a member of the Honors Leadership Council. What's more, he is an official volunteer with Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign through which he is spearheading a massive voter registration drive at Purdue.

During his Purdue career, Anand has played a significant role in the Honors College. As a member of the Honors Leadership Council, he helps to create and lead different activities for Honors students throughout the year. However, I asked Anand to dig a bit deeper and describe his overall experience as an Honors student to me.

What I have enjoyed most about the Honors College has been my relationships with Honors professors, faculty, and staff. I've had the privilege to meet and maintain a professional relationship with many professors involved with Honors level or HONR courses. Currently, I am working on a research project with an Honors professor and am receiving great and necessary guidance on how I can make my research worthwhile. I have also benefited from my peers since the Honors College provides me with a very intimate community in which all of us share struggles and successes together.

Anand reminds us of the many reasons why being an Honor student is such a transformative experience. We are proud to call such a successful student our own, and we wish Anand the best as he continues to make great strides towards achieving his goals.
